November 13, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0502hrs 76C at Nui Yong spotted 3 sampans on the Song Ve River vicinity BS687593, calling in Artillery at 0503hrs, negative clearance proximity to a Ville. Sampans were moving to the northeast, informed MACV Mo Duc about sighting and Charlie Company. At 0808hrs Division from Commanding General effective immediately the road from Quang Ngai to Fire Support Base 411 is closed to Americal Division until further notice. When road is reopened it will be used for administration and logistic use only. Vehicles will not be used to transport troops on roads. At 1120hrs 3-1 Infantry at BS538752 had Dust Off request for 9 personnel 3 US and 6 Vietnamese at BS538752, information relay to Brigade by 1-20 Infantry. At 1514hrs 76C at Nui Vong, IOS spotted 3 VC with packs and AK-47 vicinity BS676595. They are moving to the south, requesting fire mission. At 1535hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 on station for Visual Recon for approximately 1 hour and break station at 1630hrs. At 1625hrs Helix 33 on station and sent to Charlie Company and reports braking station at 1650hrs. At 1650hrs AMC Ship and a flight of 8 Lift ships on station for Combat Assault of Alpha Company 1 PZ 1709hrs Alpha 82 LZ at BS762581, 2 PZ 1711hrs Alpha 12 LZ BS765580, 3 PZ 1730hrs Alpha 44-32 LZ at BS765580, 4 PZ 1735hrs Alpha 62 LZ BS774577 and Combat Assault is completed. At 1745hrs 1-20 Infantry AMC ship at BS774576 detained 1 male dressed in black, age 22, was evading out of the area of the Combat Assault, looked like he tried to hide something under some brush. After he was picked up, the women got something out of the brush, Kit Carson Scout Hue interrogated him, he stated he had worked for the VC, carried rice, more to follow. At 1755hrs S-4 80A resupply ship broke station. At 1827hrs 76C Nui Vong, results of IOS spotting 1514hrs vicinity BS676595, IOS operator believes he saw 1 of the 3 VC fall upon start of Red Leg fire. Radar picked up negative movement. LOH checked area upon completion of Artillery, with negative results. At 1900hrs 76 C Nui Vong radar sighting 3 to 4 personnel moving to the south, request fire mission, negative clearance, due to proximity of a Ville. At 2030hrs 1-20 Infantry destruction mission of Mangroves, Bravo Company and RF 103 did not get to perform the sweep of the area today, due to darkness, are ambushing the area tonight and will search in the morning. Legend 1st Platoon 12-18, 2nd Platoon 62-68, 3rd Platoon 82-88, 4th Platoon 32-38 and CO 44.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
November 13, 1970

At 1709hrs 1st pick up Alpha Company conducts a Combat Assault to BS762584 to BS774577 last Landing Zone, all LZ cold. At 1745hrs AMC Ship at BS774576 detained 1 male dressed in black, age 22 was evading out of the area of Combat Assault, looked like he tried to hide something under some brush. After he was picked up, the women got something out of the brush, Kit Carson Scout Hue interrogated him, he stated he had worked for VC only to carried rice he was then turn over to Military Intelligence. At 1816hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon picked up 1 male detainee, vicinity BS767571, negative ID says he is 42 years old, but appears much younger (military age). He is wearing all black and we will keep till morning, then we will send him in, Kit Carson Scout says he is lying. At 1935hrs 1st Platoon at BS767571 detained 1 Vietnamese female age 36, no ID wearing all black and name is Ho Thi Thuy. She was picked up at BS767571, will send her in on back haul tomorrow. At 2130hrs Alpha Company in the vicinity grid BS767571 detained 13 females ranging from 14-35, all with negative ID, they were all evading when the Combat Assault into the area. Will be back haul on the 14th. (Have a list of names and ages).

 

Bravo Company
November 13, 1970

At 1115hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon discovered 1 dead (Vietnamese female) VC vicinity 733585 at approximately 1800hrs November 1970, the 2nd Platoon had moved north to establish a Night Defense Position and swept north of Thi Pho Nhi to secure the area. There was no shooting or any contact by any element in the area. The appeared to be in her twenties and is suspected as being executed. She had a hole in the middle of her forehead with powder burns visible. Unit interpreter, quizzer Vietnamese in the area, and they had no positive information and Bravo Company quizzed all members of Bravo Company and could add nothing to the above woman had been dead 5-6 hours upon discovery. At 1830hrs 2nd Platoon received 1 M-79 round from BS739574, approximately 300 meters to the east. They are calling in Artillery at this time, 1 man wounded, lower right forearm, Request Routine Dust Off, denied, due to nightfall, will pick up at first light. Bravo Company reports SSGT Charles F. Weyant WIA on November 13, 1970 but (M) evac first light in morning to Battalion Aid Station treated and release with frag wound in right arm.

 

Charlie Company
November 13, 1970

At 0600hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon checking out area where flare went off and at BS669557 found a booby trap. It was 1 large can filled with Petna, with smoke grenade device, looked about a week old and was on a trail with no trip wire attached. The Kit Carson Scout said VC put down explosives, but didn’t set them until they were ready to leave the area. At 1055hrs Charlie Company the 82 element at BS681579, Urgent Dust Off for 2 US and 1 (scout dog), hit a booby trap was in a hedgerow along a trail, Line #186, hander and dog, completed 1125hrs. At 1150hrs they also found about 50 meters that one they found a football type hand frag, with trip wire, in a trail made by a APC and destroyed it in place. At 1850hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon in Night Defense Position at BS666575, 1st Platoon in Night Defense Position at BS673555. At 1925hrs Charlie Company 66 ambush in location at BS655575 and at 1933hrs 86 ambush is location at BS670582.

 

Delta Company
November 13, 1970

0930hrs Delta Company the 82 element is moving out to BS744421. At 1155hrs Delta Company 82 patrol closed on LZ Liz. At 1535hrs Delta Company patrol closed back on LZ Liz and the Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
November 13, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.
