June 13, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0030hrs 1-20 Infantry Radar Targets sighted 10 to 15 stationary personnel at BS801447 and at 1950hrs with Bravo Company informed. And at 2220hrs 8 to 10 stationary personnel were sighted at BS724471 and engaged with 12 HE of Artillery 105mm. At 2250hrs 10 to 15 stationary personnel were sighted at BS724470 engaged with 10 HE of Artillery 105mm and at 2340hrs 10 to 15 stationary personnel at BS724435 were engaged with 34 HE of Artillery 155mm. TMF at 0515hrs String 73, was activated by 4 personnel are moving southwest to northeast at BS778375 at 3 miles per hour with metal detected. The Target was engaged with 16 VT of Artillery 105mm and Alpha Company informed. At 0754hrs Alpha Company 93 and the 26 Engineer we are moving to BS743615. At 0826hrs Alpha Company 26 Engineer a CEV took 1 RPG round from their southwest at 200 to 300 meters at BS743615 and results 2 US WIA from frag there was no damage to the CEV and the engineer personnel were not evac. At 0905hrs Helix (FAC) the 03 elements is putting in an air strike at BS698485. At 1250hrs 1-20 Infantry we request a mine dog for the Alpha 93 element for tomorrow. We requested a scout dog team for Charlie Company to be picked up tomorrow when the chopper comes on station. At 1555hrs TMF at string 73 was activated by 4 personnel northwest to southeast with metal detected and engaged with 8 HE of Artillery 105mm, Alpha Company informed. At 1710hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer and Alpha Company 97 element closed on BS769600. At 1716hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer in the land clearing operation a total of 24 hours were worked with the area BS742604 to BS743604 to BS748608 to BS748608 (200 X 300) cleared, 10 fighting position were destroyed, 1 105 round, 1 155 round and 1 homemade Chi Com grenade was found. We gave 4 D7 operational, 1 D7 deadline with a track blown off and 2 CEV operational. At 1850hrs TMF String 72 is activated by 6 personnel who are moving west at 3 miles per hour with no clearance. At 2325hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at BS840421 with negative clearance and at 2110hrs 8 to 10 stationary personnel were sighted at BS729470 and engaged with 16 HE of Artillery 105mm. At 2255hrs 8 to 10 stationary personnel were sighted at BS729495 and engaged with 16 HE of Artillery 105mm and at 0200hrs 1 to 4 personnel were sighted at BS787393 with negative clearance. At 0450hrs 1 to 5 personnel were sighted at BS720460 and engaged with 10 HE of Artillery 155mm.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 13, 1970

Alpha Company set out on Saturation patrolling early again and would be setting out some Mechanical Ambushes. At 0830hrs A 93 element and Charlie Company 26th Engineers took one RPG round from their southwest at 200 to 300 meters at BS743613 in results the two US WIA from frag with no damage to the CEV and the Charlie Company 26 Engineer personnel where not evacuated. At 1053hrs Alpha Company 93 we request and urgent Dust Off for 2 US with multiple frag weapons of the leg and back to (Robert Gray) and one with Multiple frag wounds to the hip Thomas Walters at grid BS749615 Utility Dolphin is on station. Alpha Company at 1625hrs is moving to our Night Defense Position at 758384. SP4 ROBERT LEE GRAY LISTED AS KHA, (Died of Wounds see June 16, 1970 91 Evac Multiple frag wounds back, Mass wounds both legs). PFC Gary O. Mooneyham treated and released field frag wound right leg, and SSGT Thomas J. Walters 23 Med Multiple frag wounds left leg. Charlie Company 26 Engineer reports CPT Kenneth L. Keefe with frag wounds to hand, side and back at 23 Medical and Bravo Company 26 Engineer PFC Phomdle M. Parker with minor scratches treated and released in the field.

 

Bravo Company
June 13, 1970

At 1250hrs Bravo Company 16 element found and destroyed a round similar to a 8"round but not an 8" round at BS777434. At 1730hrs Bravo Company the 93 element has closed, the 32 element is moving to BS826443, the 32a is moving to BS830434. The 97 element is at BS758459 when they picked up one male, age 25, wearing a purple shirt and gray pants no ID, we will send to MACV.

 

Charlie Company
June 13, 1970

At 0805hrs Charlie Company 13 element is moving to pick up their mechanical ambush at BS677506, approximately 25 meters away a camouflaged trail was found which lead to a tunnel and hootch. In the Tunnel found one 60mm canister, one M-16 Magazine and assorted clothing all destroyed except the magazine. At 1030hrs Charlie Company the 13 element has closed on BS676513 and left a stay behind at BS675507. At 1115hrs Charlie Company we have a PZ at BS676515 to LZ BS688500 at 1150hrs. The 13 element spot 4 VC in the area of BS678513 the area of the old Night Defense Position. The 17 element engage 2 VC at 50-75 meter resulting in one VC KIA approximately 25 years of age with No ID and wearing a black shirt and OD shorts. One M-26 grenade was CIA. The other VC was knocked down, but negative finding. The 13 element observed 3 to 4 more VC in the same area. The VC were engaged with 81mm and small arms with gun ships requested but not available. It was reported later one heavy blood trail was found. Charlie Company all elements have closed on BS688600. At 1810hrs Charlie Company we request a routine Dust Off for 1 US with temperature of 102 and possible malaria, line #535, completed at 1825hrs. At 1950hrs Charlie Company the Command Post is in their Night defense Position at BS693489 and the 17 element is at BS679411.

 

Delta Company
June 13, 1970

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Delta Company is sending their road security to their positions.

 

Echo Company
June 13, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 1 for a total expended of 10 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Battalion Security Mission.
