Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 13, 1969

Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0350hrs LZ Liz Bravo Company Bunker #15 has just received 2 rounds of small arms fire from beyond perimeter wire reactions is Shooting Defense Targets at this time. At 0905hrs Charlie Company 39 Engineer at BS755493 sweep team found 1 35 pound pressure device and destroyed (Info Only). At 1025hrs FAC 31 is putting in Air Strike at BS734470, had 3 dud 500 pounds bombs. Bomb Damage Assessment, 8 bunkers probable, delay fuses tore area up. At 1300hrs Alpha Company reports we have linked up with the Security Platoon about 2 hours after we arrived here. The 5" naval explosive is supposed to be turned over to engineers near this location. Brigade is supposed to have taken care of this. At 1840hrs Charlie Company called for emergency resupply of ammo. LTC Wilson called CPT Boyd and asked his disposition and actions during the sniper attack. The following is a summary of the action: Just after the supply ship came in with his last load we received automatic weapons fire from 6-8 weapons, OP’s were out 150-175 meters to the east and west and less than that to the north and south. Action taken was to fire the claymores and organic weapon. No attempt was made to maneuver against the enemy force. LTC Wilson informed CPT Boyd that this casualty rate is too high for the current intensity of conflict. Also LIC Wilson informed him to have OP’s out approximately 300 metes and in position to maneuver against sniper. CPT Boyd also informed that to use better fire control so that his basic load was not expended against a few snipers. Emergency re supply will be request only for bonfire emergencies.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion.

 

Alpha Company
August 13, 1969

Alpha Company making a Combat Assault 1st the pick up zone 0630hrs and last LZ at 1045hrs to present Location BS712611. They plan for a Night Defense Position BS716605 with the snake 21 element at BS714607. At 1115hrs Alpha Company 21 element found a 5" naval round and are waiting for the Commanding Officer to return to this location to decide what should be done with it, we will inform what decision is made. Alpha Company 1300hrs we linked the security platoon about 2 hours after we arrived here. The 5" naval explosive is supposed to be turned over the engineers near this location. At 2115hrs Alpha Company 54 and 55 snakes are in location at this time.

 

Bravo Company
August 13, 1969

Bravo Company has the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0550hrs the 94 element on south OP reports 2 incoming mortar rounds shooting DT with 81mm. At 0815hrs Bravo Company 51 element is moving off Liz for training activities, and closed back at 0930hrs (Ajax 92).

 

Charlie Company
August 13, 1969

At 1047hrs Charlie Company have two VCS, one female 18, came from a VC hamlet, one male 86 years old father of NVA Major and have documents to confirm this will send plans for tonight and tomorrow at 1345hrs. Tonight Night Defense Position is at BS807465, snakes 21-BS809468, snake22-BS804462 and the Cordon and Search into BS798462. At 1815 Urgent Dust Off: received sniper fire from northeast and west. (George Ayers) and (Schulte Norman) had to be to be Dust Off Ayers received wound to left shoulder, Schulte has sucking chest wound. Command and Control will be making Dust Off at BS802468 completed at 1820hrs. At 1830hrs Charlie Company after resupply was completed we received sniper fire from out northeast, east and west, approximately 7 to 8 snipers. As the results of sniper fire 2 US wounded and we returned fire with negative results. Charlie Company returned fire with negative results. Charlie Company called for a resupply of ammo, LTC Wilson called CPT Boyd and asked his disposition and actions during the sniper attack. At 1947hrs we are moving out of our logger to Night Defense Position site in by 2110hrs at BS807465. Our 51 and 91 element is on the move to Condon pre-planned Ville at (BS798462) now instead of 0200hrs. Charlie Company reports SP4 NORMAN SCHULTE LISTED AS KHA (Died of Wounds).

 

Delta Company
August 13, 1969

At 0650hrs Delta Company is moving out of Night Defense Position to a Day logger with the 21 element Recon in Force to BS738439 and BS732445. Security platoon is leaving LZ Goldie and headed for Duc Pho and Delta Company moved into their Night Defense Position and put out snakes at 2200hrs. The 51 element in ambush position spotted some VC/NVA, took under fire got 2 VC/NVA KIA, no weapons. After the 4.2 support fire re-swept the area and confirmed 2 KIA.

 

Echo Company
August 13, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. 4.2 Platoon reports Defensive Targets 1 Schedule fires 5 with total expend 15 HE with 3 WP rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon is in Chu Lai for Stand Down. At 1345hrs Security Platoon, we are leaving LZ Goldie and are headed for Duc Pho at this time.
