Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 12, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0130hrs TMF at 0121hrs String 61 C spotted a stationary target, metal confirmed, and engaged at 0124hrs with 8 HE Artillery 105. At 0730hrs S-4 Dolphin 6 is on station for AMC ship, Combat Assault of Alpha and Bravo Companies. At 0802hrs Dolphin 410 is on station for re supply. At 0940hrs S-4 Dolphin 410 is breaking station. At 1310hrs Blue Ghost 25 is on station for Bravo Company sweeping force. At 1345hrs Box car 13 is on station for hook lead to OP Fag and Wink drops completed at 1355hrs. At 1405hrs Dolphin 410 is on station for re supply. At 1415hrs Blue Ghost 410 is breaking station at this time. At 1510hrs Primo 6 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 2300hrs South OP vicinity BS754421 requests Urgent Dust Off of 1 US with rupture to the spleen. Received this injury 3 days ago while working, has had condition before, Cady, Robert completed at 2325hrs. At 2315hrs TMF, at 2047hrs String 61 B and C report stationary target, negative metal confirmation and engaged at 2057hrs with 16 VT HE rounds Artillery 105. At 2229hrs Sting 61 B and C spotted 3 to 4 personnel that where moving east to west at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirmed, and engaged at 2233hrs with 20 HE VT rounds Artillery 105. Legend: 1st Platoon 71-76, 2nd Platoon 91-96, 3rd Platoon 41-46, 4th Platoon 01-06, CO-08.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
January 12, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0430hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS712428 had 1 of their Mechanical Ambushes detonate and fired Illumination at 0440hrs, checked out the area with negative findings. Stopped Illumination at 0450hrs will check the area further at first light.

 

Bravo Company
January 12, 1971

At 1045hrs Bravo Company at BS647524 while extracting the last 2 ships leads of Bravo Company Shark 6 spotted 4 NVA dressed in green uniforms hiding in some brush. Shark 6 engaged the four NVA and the last two ships leads were inserted to search the area. Bravo Company found 4 NVA KIA (1 female and 3 males) and captured 3 AK47 and 1 AK50, and a small amount of documents. At 1100hrs Shark 6 spotted addition movement vicinity BS642524 (just south of the East West Stream). He engaged the area and received small arms fire in return. The 3rd and 4th element were picked up at LZ Liz and reinserted into contact area vicinity BS641523 and BS640528. Artillery was fired through out the period. Blue Ghost 25 arrived on station 1330hrs received a briefing by Bravo Company Commander and stated have not spotted any movement at this time. Elements swept streambed with negative finding. All elements have linked up and are continuing to search to the south. At 1310hrs Blue Ghost 25 is on station for Bravo Company sweeping force. At 2000hrs Bravo Company the Command Post and 2nd and 3rd Platoons at BS641524, with one ambush out.

 

Charlie Company
January 12, 1971

At 0735hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS694546, 2nd Platoon ambush at BS678567. At 0955hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS684580. At 1005hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon is moving out for BS685550. At 1115hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS704555 found a 155 booby trap with a pressure release device which was three pronged, appearing to be of the type used in the M-2 Bouncing Betty, it was destroyed in place, also the Booby trap was located on a trail. At 1230hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon at OP Pax bought a 20mm round from a boy who was 12 year old, and paid 1 can of C-Ration. At 1340hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon moving out from BS705567. At 1345hrs Boxcar 13 on station for hook lead to OP Frag and Wink drops completed at 1355hrs. At 1440hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon patrol vicinity BS708566 received small arms fire from the south at approximately 200 meters. They then started receiving fire from the north across the river at a distance of 200 meters, they engaged with small arms and M-60 fire along with M-79 and 60mm and 81mm mortar fire. They continued to receive fire requested and Gun ships came on station at 1540hrs to assist the platoon. They then moved into the area to sweep, the gun ships broke station at 1640hrs and the platoon continued to seep the area with negative results. At 1732hrs Charlie Company reports the Vietnamese locations in vicinity BS696564 and BS696560. At 2050hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is in location vicinity BS668575 with 1st Platoon ambush in location at BS686544.

 

Delta Company
January 12, 1971

Delta Company will conduct Recon in Force and Day ambush in their Area of Operation. At 0753hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon is moving out for BS752578, 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS753568. At 1630hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon on patrol found 1 frag type Booby Trap located in tall grass with trip wire 4" off ground destroyed. At 1835hrs the Delta Company locations Command Post and 3rd Platoon BS708448, 1st Platoon BS753568, BS754473, and 2nd Platoon at BS717466. SP4 Robert F. Cady (see Headquarters and Headquarter Company) and PFC John C. Wolf was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (See January 11, 1971).

 

Echo Company
January 12, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0701hrs Recon Platoon is moving vicinity BS7343 to check out hamlet in the area. At 0850hrs Recon ambush is closing on LZ Liz. At 0910hrs Recon vicinity BS750429 hit a booby trap Kapusta, less of left leg below the knee KIA, Nielson frag wounds to the right thigh, Teets right arm and side minor frag wounds. At 0910hrs Recon ambush returning from night ambush location detonated booby trap vicinity BS750429. It was believed to be a 81mm round located just outside LZ Liz perimeter wire, trip wire was located in an opening in the wire. Results, 1 US is KIA, 2 with minor frag wounds and 1Vietnamese female with shrapnel to chest. Personnel from artillery checked the crater and advised that it was an 81mm HE round. SGT Richard P Nielson (11F40) (multiple frag wounds left arm, both legs) and SGT Steven J. Teets (multiple frag wounds both legs right arms and neck) was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital, SGT David J. Templeman treated at Battalion Aid multiple frag wounds right leg and SP4 EDWARD JOHN KAPUSTA IS LISTED AS KIA.
