Headquarters and Headquarter Company
December 11, 1969

Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0840hrs 1-20 Infantry the IPW Chieu Hoi Center has been established. At 0855hrs 26th Engineer one US 5ton truck detonated unknown type mine on Access Road about 450 meters from Highway 1at approximately grid BS775443. Results one US WIA in with scrap in the head and legs, possibly he will lose his eye. The US is from Dragon (Thompson). Pick up site is BS775444 completed at 0900hrs. At 0950hrs 1-20 Infantry S-3 Major Robert Neilson request mine dog for 0700hrs from CPT Basset and pick up at Ranger Pad Chu Lai. Warlords will pick up 0715hrs at ranger pad well drop off at southeast pad. At 1029hrs Alpha Company of the investigation of the mining incident on the access road: one PRC 25 Battery was found at BS774444. The mine incident location was 300 meters west of Highway 1 and the access road intersection. The Battery was found 20 meters south of the mine explosion and there was evidence of 2 to 3 persons (footprints) around the battery. The mine was believed, to be put in placed last night. At 1210hrs 26th Engineers there is a bunker in the tree line south of the mining incident. This bunker has a concrete slab roof with round poles supporting it. This bunker looks about 3 to 4 months old. We will blow the bunker at 1400hrs grid BS776443. At 1525hrs one US Dump truck hit an unknown type mine on the access road truck was a Combat Loss. It was about 200 to 300 hundred meters from the junction of Highway 1 and the access road. One US was wounded in the legs (Brown), and Dolphin 28 completed the Dust Off to 91 Evac.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion. PFC Thomas Kendle was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Alpha Company
December 11, 1969

At 0805hrs All Alpha Company snakes have closed on LZ Liz. Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and will conducts some security sweeps around LZ Liz. 1-20 Infantry reports The IPW Chieu Hoi Center has been established. At 0805hrs Alpha Company reports all snakes have closed on LZ Liz.

 

Bravo Company
December 11, 1969

At 0602hrs the 16 and 14 elements are moving to BS799441. At 0630hrs Bravo Company 75 element is moving out to BS779417 and the 76 element has closed on BS789417. At 0715hrs Bravo Company the Gorilla element is moving to BS802437. At 0905hrs Bravo Company at BS783433, required Dust Off for US with fits Dust Off, completed at 0902hrs (Thompson). At 0947hrs Bravo Company the 32 element will be making an area sweep around mining incident location. At 1033hrs Bravo Company the Gorilla Element is moving to checkpoint 5 at BS795424. At 1045hrs Bravo Company the 32 element found some papers at BS7744 and will bring them back from the interpreter to look at. At 1128hrs Bravo Company 32 element has closed on the Twin Ville at BS776446. At 1145hrs Bravo Company reports Ranger element has picked up 1 male Vietnamese detainee at grid BS786462, he was wearing a black shirt and black shots. He had no ID card but did have a document that says he is VC and the Gorilla Team has closed on BS783433. At 1506hrs Bravo Company at BS818422 checking out intelligence report there is suppose to be 8 to 10 VC in a tunnel. They observed 3 to 4 evading personnel, evading east. CIA 1 man dressed in black shorts, black shirt with no ID. He saw that Bravo Company was after him so he gave up and he had a bullet wound in the arm and will evac to LZ Bronco. At 1555hrs Bravo Company at BS811420 requests Dust Off, for 1 Vietnamese female with gun shot wound in tight. WIA by friendly fire when they engaged enemy personnel, Dust Off completed at 1606hrs. At 2206hrs Bravo Company at BS783433 the Ranger element had a person penetrate partially into Command Post area, engaged with small arms and person evaded with unknown results. At 2155hrs Bravo Company at BS782462 the 33 element with PF with them while moving to their Night Defense Position, when one of the PF ran ahead to warm villagers of American’s approach. The PF have this person in custody at this time.

 

Charlie Company
December 11, 1969

At 0807hrs Charlie Company reports there is a Sampan off shore, with 2 people moving west. At 0908hrs Charlie Company we have checkout the results of the boat we fired on earlier. A Sampan was capsized by M79 fire. The water was very swift, estimated 3 VC drowned but no bodies were found. At 1025hrs Charlie Company the 32 element is moving out to BS798482, they will be blowing bunkers around this location. At 2250hrs Charlie Company at BS887468, spotted a boat (unknown size) engaged with small arms fire and the boat capsized and the person from the boat were swimming in the water, still engaged person in the water unknown results. At 1600hrs Charlie Company is located at BS794476. At 2300hrs Charlie Company at BS794476 received 1 60mm mortar round from west with negative casualties or damage, engaged with 81mm mortar with unknown results. At 2348hrs Charlie Company the 22 element reports has movement to the west and are working up 81mm on the target.

 

Delta Company
December 11, 1969

At 0620hrs Delta Company the 14, 34, and 74 elements closed on BS736447. At 0720hrs Delta Company Combat Assault from grid BS736447, 1st PZ 0732hrs and Last 5th LZ 0830hrs to BS703451. At 0936hrs 32 and 72 elements are moving on their patrols to BS690480 and BS693467 respectively. Delta Company reported in their Night Defense Position at BS704450 and the 14 element is at BS708456. At 1935hrs Delta Company we spotted 2 flashing lights at grid BS699415.

 

Echo Company
December 11, 1969

Echo Company Headquarter and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0610hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Schedule Fire 9 with total expended 18 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0800hrs Recon Platoon is located at Chu Lai for Stand Down.
