At 0030hrs Duc Pho at 1100hrs-25 OPERATION MELISSA reports at 130800hrs to last 1 day, RF417-PF172, PF278, PRU, Military Police Field Force Upper Left BS8537 Lower Right BS8735. Start at BS858367, BS858358, BS852363 will work to east. Air mobile and Cordon and Search Operations the Enemy in area is 15 to 20 Main Force elements with VCI. Combat Assault requested for 0800hrs PZ BS812385, LZ 3 start grids, Requests flame drop BS857362- 200 meters in each direction. At 0215hrs Area of Operation for Alpha Company will be BS6446 to BS7046 to BS7043 to BS6442 from 110001hrs to 232400hrs August 1971. At 0735hrs Resupply bird is on station call sign Upright 560 from 174 Aviation. At 0810hrs LZ Liz Access Road is clear. At 1010hrs Recon 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation 111200hrs to 152400hrs August, 1971 Upper Left BS7038, lower right BS7436. At 1115hrs 1-20 Infantry Combat Assault of Alpha and Charlie Companies: AMC on station at 1014hrs, 5 Lift ships and Guns at 1024hrs 1st PZ 1038hrs and first PZ 1038hrs and the 4th and Last LZ at LIZ 1110hrs. At 1120hrs Radar on South OP spotted 7 personnel moving southwest, they say they have been taking same path for about a week, but could never confirm packs or weapons. Today they did confirm packs. At approximately 1110hrs Command and Control Helicopter and gun ships checked on weapons: 1 gun ship took fire and engaged area at BS728384 with rockets. Recon will check area out today at BS733408. At 1130hrs Boxcar 18 is on station to pick up hook sorties for North OP, broke station at 1140hrs. At 1500hrs Primo 6 (11 Brigade Aviation) is on station and broke station at 1545hrs. At 1555hrs Brigade Commander Colonel Goodwin is at LZ Liz. At 1930hrs Access Road is closed. At 1938hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Mechanical Ambushes out: Alpha 0, Bravo 2, Delta 2 for a total 4 out. At 2015hrs 1-20 Infantry reports their Field Strength Alpha 46, Bravo 57, Delta 51, Echo 21, and HHC 8. At 2100hrs Inferno Blue B 123 Aviation is on station working Box 53 and around perimeters at LZ Liz at 2138hrs, Bronco at 2147hrs, and 2157hrs Snoopy and broke station at 2212hrs. At 2240hrs RF 169 while in ambush location made contact with unknown size enemy force at 2100hrs, completed at 2129hrs to Quang Ngai from BS794387. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97 and CO-29.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.
Alpha Company
August 11, 1971
Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0215hrs Area of Operation for Alpha Company is BS6446 to BS7046 to BS7043 to BS6442 to start 110001hrs to 232400hrs August 1971. At 1115hrs AMC is on station with lift ships and guns at 1024hrs to begin Alpha and Charlie Companies Combat Assault Alpha 1st PZ 1038hrs and Last LZ was 1102hrs. At 1200hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon moving to BS688454 and at 1327hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon moving out to BS687453. At 1403hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon found 2 500 pounds without the Petna at BS687452. At 1410hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon move to their Night Defense Position at BS690452 and their field strength today is 46.
Bravo Company
August 11, 1971
At 0805hrs Bravo Company established Patrol base at BS648504 at 1208hrs checkpoint 1 at BS649508 and at 1338hrs has closed at BS648504hrs. At 1705hrs Bravo Company 1st and 2nd Platoon is at BS650505 and will have 2 Mechanical Ambushes out tonight.
Charlie Company

At 0745hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon running a Security Patrol BS673493 and closed on location as their LZ. Charlie Company 2nd Platoon establish their LZ and at 1050hrs Charlie Company is extracted to LZ Liz as a back haul completed at 1110hrs at Liz where they take over the Security Mission for the LZ.
Delta Company

At 1100hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon is moving to BS660486 and then 1st Platoon is now moving to checkpoint 2 at BS660493 and then the 1st Platoon moved to their Patrol Base at BS663488. At 1418hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon replaced by 29 V Patrol and is at checkpoint 2 vicinity BS660493. At 1453hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon returning to Patrol Base. At 1638hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon and 2nd Platoon and Command Post is moving to their Night Defense Position at grid BS662489 and close on position at 1925hrs. At 1945hrs Recon Platoon calls in their Defense Targets #1 at BS724425, # 2 BS730415 and # 3 at BS722417 and at 2014hrs Recon reports they have closed on their Night Defense Position at BS727418.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At approximately 1110hrs Command and Control Helicopter and gun ships checked on weapons: 1 gun ship took fire and engaged area at BS728384 with rockets.
