Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Battalion Headquarters is located at LZ Liz working the Duc Pho Area of Operations. At 0100hrs LZ Liz received 1 60mm mortar round hit outside of wire the at 0103hrs received 5 more 60mm rounds with negative casualties or damage, and fired counter mortar to grid 725444 and firing artillery with unknown results.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued to carry out their Mission of general support for the Battalion. At 2207hrs LZ Bronco took one round of 140mm rocket with negative casualties or damage from 727407 to 734396 returned fire with artillery and 81mm mission on both grids. Headquarters and Headquarter Company reports SP4 RICHARDO J. GOMEZ IS LISTED, AS KIA was a medic attached to Alpha Company (see Alpha Company on June 10, 1969).

 

Alpha Company
June 10, 1969

At 0800hrs Alpha Company is located at 765396, Recon returned to LZ Bronco and at 1000hrs Alpha Company is at BS766396 and at 1055hrs received fire from the northwest 1 US WHA and completed Dust Off at 1100hrs. At 1135hrs Alpha Company has 1 AK 47, 1 Chi Com machinegun, 4 NVA KIA with 2 US WHA. At 1215hrs Alpha Company reports the Commanding Officer was KHA CPT Walsh. At 1315hrs Alpha Company 2 heat casualties where extracted with 1 US KHA. At 1330hrs Alpha Company report 2 NVA KIA with 1 US KHA at BS763404. At 1340hrs Delta Company conducted a Combat Assault PZ 1345hrs and LZ at 1420hrs and the 3-4 Regiment ARVN at BS763367, engaged 3 VC and 3 VC KIA negative weapons, found unknown amount of mortar rounds. At 1635hrs Alpha Company at BS743404 update of contact 5 US KHA and 3 WHA (E). At 1740hrs Delta Company at BS741395 has 3 NVA KIA, 1 Chi Com machinegun and 2 AK 47. At 1750hrs Alpha Company at BS755396 received small arms fire and automatic weapons fire on the PZ. The 174th Aviation had one man WHA (E) also received 2 mortar rounds on the PZ Hot, got 1 lift off and on a hold at LZ Liz. Reported while extraction of Alpha Company lead ship went down, heavy automatic fire and RPG fired in the area, reports crew OK. At 2020hrs Delta Company at BS749404 have 15 Alpha Packs with them, at 2105hrs at BS749404 Command and Control Helicopter re supply Delta Company and evac 2 WHA, (both in shock and one has gun shot wound.). Delta Company is securing the downed extraction ship received unknown amount of RPG and small arms fire results where 9 WHA and extensive damage to the down ship. Alpha Company reports SP4 GILYNN THOMAS CAHOON, PFC JAMES HOPPER JR, SGT LEE ARTHUR WILLIAMS, SP4 LAWRENCE LEALAND WHITE, AND CPT DAVID WILLIAM WALSH with Alpha Company and company Medic CPL RICARDO JOSE GOMEZ from Headquarters and Headquarter Company LISTED AS KHA. Alpha Company reports that SGT Eugene A. Holland, SP4 Royce L. Lowman, SP4 David G. Locke, and PFC Walter Bertelson where evac to the 312th Evac Hospital.

 

Bravo Company
June 10, 1969

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0100hrs Bravo Company at LZ Liz had 1 60mm mortar hit outside of wire and then followed by 5 60mm rounds with negative casualties or damage, counter mortar at grid BS725444, firing Artillery with unknown results.

 

Charlie Company
June 10, 1969

At 1335hrs Charlie Company is located at BS808418. At 1510hrs Charlie Company is at BS808415.

 

Delta Company
June 10, 1969

Recon 1-20 and Alpha Company 1-20 made heavy contact with an unknown size enemy force on 9 June. It continued until dark when the NVA broke contact. At 1510hrs Delta Company was at BS741395 moving into position to support and at 1740hrs at BS741395 had 3 NVA KIA, 1 Chi Com Machine Gun, and 2 AK47 CIA. Delta Company was to assist Alpha Company in the search for the withdrawing enemy. Alpha Company 1-20 Infantry continued to make scattered contact with the enemy throughout the day and a helicopter was shot down. At this time Delta Company moved in to secure the downed helicopter which was shot down in the first lift of Alpha Company extraction in the late afternoon. While Delta Company 1-20 Infantry securing the downed aircraft was subjected to continual attacks throughout the night, but held its position. At 2105hrs Command and Control Helicopter re supply Delta Company and took their 2 WHA (1 Shock, and one gunshot) Late in the evening one of Delta Company Ambush position was attacked resulting in 1 US KHA and 3 WHA. While securing the downed extraction ship received unknown amount of RPG fire small arms fire resulting in 9 US WHA and extensive damage to the downed ship. The final results showed 6 US KHA, 13 US WHA, 68 NVA KIA, 9 crew-served weapons CIA, and 9 Individual weapons CIA. Delta Company reports that PFC ROLAND FORREST DIPOLO (LISTED AS KHA died of wounds ON JUNE 11 1969 reach Hospital on June 11, 1969), SP4 Donald Chelson and SP4 Danny Bivins where evac to 312th Evac Hospital.

 

Echo Company
June 10, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0800hrs Recon Platoon reports their Security Mission for LZ Bronco which also includes Search and Clear Operations around LZ Bronco.
