Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 10, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0450hrs 81mm mortar fired so the Bunker Line could check the radar sighting of 3 to 5 personnel moving east from BS758433 with negative sightings by the bunker line. At 0500hrs TMF String 66 B was activated by an undetermined number of stationary personnel with metal detected, engaged with 4 HE of 105 Artillery rounds with a Visual Recon Team requested. At 1830hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer a total of 59 hours were worked clearing 60 acres in the area BS686584 to BS689585 to BS689588 to BS791587 to BS690599 to BS687599 destroying 4 bunkers, 500 meters of trench, 1 155 Artillery round. We only have 10 D7 on hand the other equipment remains the same. At 2045hrs 1-20 infantry Area of Operations is requested from Bridge in the Date/Time/Grid 10200hrs to 121200hrs August 1970 in the area BS7439 to BS7339 to BS7336 and BS7736 for Recon Combat Operations approved by Colonel Grim. At 2143hrs Brigade and Division an RF Company at Bronco said the VC is setting up platoon sized ambushes along Highway 1. All units are to take necessary precautions when using highway 1, passed Info to Mo Duc and Duc Pho.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. CPT Fitzpatrick was informed and all vehicles will have shot gun when leaving LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 10, 1970

At 1425hrs Alpha Company the 72 And 74 elements are sweeping to BS791444 and BS789445 with the 72 element finding two M-1 Rifles and one SKS in a tunnel at BS789443. The weapons were in moderate condition. A fighting position was found at the end of tunnel with a trench 20’ long. The 72 element got three KIA one male, Huynh Loi, age 57 who was the Hamlet Economy Chief, one Male Tran tien guerilla squad leader, and one female Nuyah Thi Ha Women Cadre Committee member. Also 5,000 $VN, NVA Money was found in the same tunnel Documents will be evac to Bronco. The money was kept by PRU. Still have Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Bravo Company
August 10, 1970

At 0710hrs Bravo Company the 74 element has moved to their Day Logger grid BS712600 and at 0737hrs Bravo Company 34 element closed on BS748668.

 

Charlie Company
August 10, 1970

Charlie Company is OPCON to 4-3 Infantry Charlie Company 72 element with the PF found 1 M-16 in (usable condition) at 1000hrs at BS695585 we won’t be able to get the serial number until morning 11 Aug 1970. The PF have the weapon at this time (PF 172 Platoon).

 

Delta Company
August 10, 1970

At 0150hrs Delta Company the 32 element had movement 300 meters west of BS758562 and engaged the area with 8 to 10 rounds of returned fire was received. 81 Illumination was called in to check the area with negative findings. The personnel evaded to the southwest and will check the area further in the morning. At 0550hrs Delta Company 32 element is moving to check the area of contact at BS758562 while en route to their Day Logger at BS759560. At 0623hrs Delta Company the 34 blocking force is in position for the Cordon and Search Operation at BS756558, the 32 element is sweeping to the 34 block and the 70, 72 and 42 are in their Day Logger at BS759559. At 1100hrs Delta Company 70 a patrol engaged 2 VC with weapons from 250 meters at grid BS747547 one was wearing all black and the other black shorts. The individuals appeared to be setting up a possible ambush and evaded, one north and one northwest, when they spotted the US persuade with negative results. At 1755hrs Delta Company request an Urgent Dust Off for one US who was hit by sniper fire Line #93K and Name James Koch PFC completed at 1805hrs. Delta 32 is receiving sniper fire 100-150 meter to their west at BS751564. Delta the 52 element is moving to their Night Defense Position and started to Recon by fire a wood line and after taking first couple of rounds the Delta 52 took 8-11 rounds of return fire wounding the US in above message. At 1825hrs.the Delta Company 42 spotted one Vietnam at 200 meters from the Day Logger at BS759559, He had a pack and carrying something, believed to be a weapon, negative finding in checking the area. At 1928hrs Delta Company we request one routine Dust Off for one US with temperature of 103.2 and chills Name SP4 Kimby from Delta Company 32 element at grid BS759560. Delta Company Morning Report that PFC James F. Koch was evac to the 27th Surgical Hospital with gunshot wound left thigh at 1755hrs.

 

Echo Company
August 10, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0415hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 1 for a total expend of HE 9 rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0604hrs Recon the 52 element is moving to BS760410. At 0700hrs Recon Platoon the 54 element has closed on BS723450 and the 54 ambush will be at BS727450 and at 0810hrs Recon 52 Day Logger is at BS749379 with their ambush at BS743376 and tomorrow Day Logger will be at BS753365. At 1557hrs Recon Platoon the 52 element had 2 VC walk up to their OP at BS749379 resulting in 2 VC KIA with 2 US pistol belts, 1 Chi Com grenade, 1 US first aid pouch, 2 M-26 hand frag, 1 AK47, 1 homemade rucksack with food all CIA. The VC were dressed in green and moving west and engaged at 25 meters.
